Here in the north east, we all pray for long summers and short winters. According to this woman’s commentary, maybe we should be more specific with what type of weather we’re really asking for.

Many Capital Region residents are still left without power after yesterday’s storms. As of 8 am this morning, National Grid is reporting over 25,000 of their customers are still waiting for their power to be restored.

Using the word stupid isn't always polite and should be reserved for special occasions  and The Weather Channel trying to name winter storms is a perfect example of when to use the word stupid.

The Capital Region is looking at a big, messy snow storm on Friday. I can usually get away with running out on my porch with sleep pants and a t-shirt on to grab my morning paper this time of year. This morning, however, was a much different story. I was in for a rude awakening as I felt sharp, points of pain all around my body. My man-nipples were cutting some serious glass. My thermometer read -18 degrees. Ouch!

The entire northeast is getting plenty of high winds due to Sandy. We found a site that shows a 'live' charting via animation of all the wind blowing in the continental United States. It's shocking to see what a large mass of air the pressure inside Sandy is commanding - and just how widespread it is.

Gov Cuomo has just announced that the Tappan Zee Bridge near New York City will close at 4PM today (10/29) due to the high winds associated with Sandy. If you're wondering about any possible bridge closings in the Albany area, New York State has a twitter account setup that will display information about bridges across the state. For Albany area residents there is a touch of a silver lining with Sandy as the National Weather Service in Albany has stated that we should see more wind rather than rain when Sandy hits late Monday  and early Tuesday. Irene dumped around six inches of rain on the area but Sandy is expected to only bring between one and two inches.

With Sandy headed toward the Albany area, the Red Cross will be opening eleven shelters throughout the Albany area starting Monday, October 29, 2012. We have the list of shelters that has been announced thus far and some instructions for those seeking shelter.

As we well know from Irene, a hurricane (or it’s remnants) can be a very damaging and dangerous weather situation. We’ve been through this recently and as a community learned plenty of lessons. Here are some tips for being prepared for Sandy as she approaches the Albany area.

If you were planning on taking the Amtrak or Megabus to New York City from the Albany area, you'll have to cancel your plans. Both have suspended service at least through Tuesday the 30th of October and perhaps longer depending on what Sandy leaves behind.

Wild weather is the talk of the town at the moment. Local news stations have been covering the impact of Hurricane Sandy as it moves toward the lower east coast.

In preparation of the nasty weather expected to reach the area this afternoon, Alive @ Five will change locations. Rather than setting up shop at the usual rain location, today’s Smash Mouth performance will be held at the Times Union Center.

Thunderstorms expected to reach the area this afternoon could be the most severe we’ve seen in a while. There is also a slight risk of tornadoes forming according to the National Weather Service.

Today is expected to be one of hottest days of the season with high temps projected to reach 95 degrees. Days like today lead to thousands of facebook status updates like “who has a pool?” If your schedule allows you to enjoy the day poolside, you suck!

Smartphone users around the country will begin receiving tests from the government soon. Don’t worry, big brother isn’t looking at your Instagram gallery or high score in Angry Birds. Sophisticated technology will allow the National Weather Service to sent emergency alerts to warn you about nasty weather.

Mother Nature cut us some slack on Memorial Day weekend. Two of the three days were calling for rain that never arrived. We’re back to reality, however, as severe thunderstorms are expected to soak the Capital Region this afternoon.

The area could be in for some nasty weather.  WTEN's Steve Caporizzo is reporting a severe thunderstorm warning for the entire region until 9pm.  Select areas are also under tornado watch.

The incredibly un-seasonal weather is the talk of the town today.  I was never good at science in high school but I still like to experiment.  So what better way to test exactly how hot it is than to melt stuff?

Don’t be surprised if you see more skirts and flip flops than usual this afternoon. Today’s temperature could reach 90 degrees! Better than snow, right? The record high was set in 2002 at 89 degrees. I have a feeling lines will be long at ice cream shops around the area today. Here are other great ways to keep cool.

Everyone has a ton of snow storm photos in the Albany NY area. We always gets more than our fair share of snow storms (most winters), and we can never see enough great photos of snow.
