Gov Cuomo Provides More Legislation To Help Renters

Governor Andrew Cuomo is still fighting for the average citizens of this state. He signed more than 20 pieces of legislation on Wednesday that were passed by Democrats last month.

One piece of legislation calls for $100 million of federal stimulus funds to be distributed as rent vouchers. The funds are meant to help New Yorkers who are unable to pay their rent and other expenses due to COVID-19. Unfortunately, help will not be there for all New York residents struggling to pay their rent. It will only help those who were paying more than 30% of their income in rent, and they lost their income between April 1 and July 31 of this year.

Not all residents of New York feel that these funds are enough. Rent advocates had called for Governor Cuomo to cancel rent altogether. They complain that the funds will not meet the needs of struggling tenants in New York.

In addition to relief for rent payments, the governor signed a bill that would ban utility companies from shutting off services to New York residents during this state of emergency. He also passed legislation that would allow licensed pharmacists to administer the vaccine for COVID-19 once we have an approved vaccine.

Governor Cuomo is also looking out for our schools. He signed legislation that would ensure that schools receive state aid and he established a state emergency loan program to help schools that were closed because of COVID-19.

It’s apparent that it’s going to take a long time and a lot of effort for many families to recover from the financial devastation of COVID-19. These efforts are moving us in the right direction to recovering from such historic financial losses.
