A Troy man made an awful decision while attempting to flee from the police. In the midst of his attempt to escape he shot himself in the leg.

Officers with the Watervliet Police Department received a call for a suspicious man. When they arrived in the area of 23rd St. and 2nd Avenue, they encountered a man who allegedly fit the description of the suspicious subject.

While officers were attempting to interview 30-year-old Tashon Roberton of Troy, he allegedly took off running towards the Daniel P. Quinn Apartments on 2nd Ave.

After a short foot chase, the suspect was discovered in the apartment complex with a serious gunshot wound to his right leg. The police determined that the suspect accidentally shot himself in the leg.

Officers at the scene applied first aid to Mr. Robertson until medical personnel arrived at the scene. Mr. Robertson was stabilized and then transported to the hospital.

During the course of the alleged encounter, officers retrieved and secured a .45 caliber Springfield Armory handgun. Mr. Robertson was arrested and charged with one count of second-degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon (Felony) and one count of third-degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon (Felony).

Watervliet Police Chief Joseph Centanni spoke about the incident. He said, “After receiving a complaint about suspicious activity, Watervliet police officers took proactive steps which resulted in the arrest of a violent felon and the removal of a loaded handgun from our streets. The thought of what could have happened if this person attempted to use his firearm against the officers or a member of the community is of great concern to all of us.“

Tashon Robertson was arraigned in Watervliet City Court and is currently in custody at the Albany County Correctional Facility.
