Common Pays Tribute to Trayvon Martin: ‘We Must Continue to Fight for Justice and Freedom’
Yesterday marked six years since Trayvon Martin was killed at age 17 by George Zimmerman while walking home. Zimmerman, a grown man carrying a weapon, pursued the teen. He was acquitted of his murder, though Trayvon was unarmed and carrying only a bag of Skittles.
Trayvon's death helped spark the Black Lives Matter Movement, calling attention to the continued racism that permeates our criminal justice system and culture.
Common went on Twitter to honor Trayvon yesterday, posting several pictures of the teenager.
“We must continue to say his name. We must continue our fight for justice and freedom. And we must continue to stand up for our youth," Common wrote.
Common has remained a vocal participant in several human right's movements. In January, he delivered a powerful verse for the women's rights March in Utah.
On the music tip, he's gearing up to release music with his super group, August Greene, alongside Karriem Riggins and Robert Glasper. The trio recently stopped by NPR's Tiny Desk to deliver a soulful performance that also featured Andra Day, Brandy and Maimouna Youssef.
