Undoubtedly most people in the United States know that a grand jury in Kentucky declined to prosecute officers in the shooting death of Breonna Taylor.  Because of this, protests have erupted all over the country, including Albany, New York.

Yesterday prosecutors in Louisville, Kentucky announced that officers would not be prosecuted in the shooting death of Breonna Taylor.  One officer, Brett Hankinson, has been charged with Wanton Endangerment for endangering Breonna Taylor‘s neighbors; however, no one was charged with her death.

Protests took place all over the country, including Albany.  Last night protesters showed up outside of the executive mansion to protest Ms. Taylor‘s death.  Protesters camped out in front of the governor's mansion overnight and did not leave until around 8:30 am this morning.

Because of the protests, Eagle Street was closed down at Madison Avenue.  State Police officers were on the scene as of 8:30 am when protesters cleared the area.

Protesters wrote chalk messages outside of the mansion.  They wrote, “BLM“, “murderers“, “blood on your hands Cuomo“, “Breonna Taylor“, “say her name“,  and “antifa“.  Because the messages were written in chalk, no one was charged with destroying property.

The purpose of protesting in Albany was to call on Governor Cuomo for police reform in New York.  During the Black Lives Matter protests earlier this year, police reforms were discussed and the legislative process has begun to make changes to police misconduct laws in New York.

The economic and racial climate in this country is rife with tension.  People are really struggling to maintain normalcy.  Police reform and police accountability are an absolute must in 2020.  It’s election season, we all have to do our part to make positive changes in this country.
