Ja Rule Spends Another Birthday in Jail

Being a leap year baby, Ja Rule can essentially pick one of two different days to celebrate his born day. But unfortunately, he will spend his 37th birthday behind bars.

Although he finished his two-year sentence on gun charges last week, the Queens, N.Y., native still needs to do more time in federal prison for tax evasion. So just in case you weren't sure how Ja Rule found himself in trouble with the law, TheDrop.fm details the events that led to his imprisonment.

July 23, 2007: Ja Rule and two other men were pulled over for speeding in New York City. After checking the vehicle, cops found a .40-caliber Taurus pistol with the serial numbers scratched off. The 'Pain Is Love' creator was arrested for criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree and booked with bail set at $150,000.

Dec. 13, 2010: The rapper pleads guilty to "attempted weapon possession in the second degree" and is sentenced to two years in prison.

March 2011: Although Ja Rule was supposed to start his two-year jail sentence at a New York prison in March 2011, his sentence was moved to June  2011, in order to deal with tax evasion allegations he was charged with. On March 22, he plead guilty to the charges and made an agreement with prosecutors "to dismiss two counts of unpaid taxes on income earned in 2007 and 2008. Rule, 35, will be sentenced on the three remaining tax evasion charges in June and faces up to one year in prison and $100,000 in fines on each count."

June 8, 2011: The 'Put It on Me' rhymer turns himself in to authorities to start his two-year prison sentence for the 2007 arrest.

July 18, 2011: Federal courts sentenced Ja Rule to 28 months in a federal jail for failing to file his taxes. He already served a little over five weeks from a previous jail sentence by this time.

Feb. 28, 2012: In honor of his 36th birthday and it being a leap year, Ja Rule called DJ Gary "Big Poppa" Spears' radio show on Kiss-FM to share his experiences in prison.

March 8, 2012: Authorities found out he contacted the radio jock and punished him with a week's worth of hard labor for making the unauthorized call.

Feb. 21, 2013: Ja Rule completed his two-year sentence for a gun charge and is released from a New York State prison. However, he was transferred to a facility to wait for his federal assignment. Since he served the sentences for each of the crimes together, he has four more months to stay in the federal prison. He reportedly still needs to pay the $1.1 million in back taxes and may be sent to a halfway house, camp or some other federal facility.
