The Hudson Valley had mild weather this holiday season. There wasn't a white Christmas in December but residents have experienced snow multiple times in January of 2024.

While some people are enjoying winter activities throughout New York state, others are hibernating and hoping for an early Spring.

Groundhog day is February 2, 2024. Next month, we will learn if there will be 6 more weeks of winter or an early Spring, predicted by a cute groundhog.

Along with predictions, the Old Farmers' Almanac has been guiding us through each season since 1792.

When Did The Old Farmers' Almanac Start?

The Old Farmers' Almanac shared that their first editor was Robert B. Thomas which was published in 1792, this was during the time of George Washington's first term serving as president.

The Old Farmers' Almanac "became an immediate success" and "by the second year, circulation had tripled from 3,000 to 9,000".

What Is The Old Farmers' Almanac?

The Old Farmers' Almanac shared,

"An almanac, by definition, records and predicts astronomical events (the rising and setting of the Sun, for instance), tides, weather, and other phenomena with respect to time."

The Old Farmers' Almanac was different since it wasn't a novel, instead the predictions of astronomical and weather by Thomas were described to be "were more accurate, the advice more useful, and the features more entertaining."

Later on, other editors took over the Old Farmers' Almanac and introduced the first female editor in 2000.

The Old Farmers' Almanac includes,

"Each edition calculates the tides and times for fishermen, travelers, sailors, bookkeepers, beekeepers, gardeners, prognosticators, pollsters, politicians, cooks, and really anyone who walks this Earth, including farmers. "

The almanac also has puzzles, facts, trivia, poems and more.

The Old Farmers' Almanac Prediction for this winter is shared from Hudson Valley PostThey claim, 

"The Farmers' Almanac is predicting a freezing-cold, stormy and snowy winter for New York State."


"Winter weather is making a comeback. After a warm winter anomaly last year, traditional cool temperatures and snowy weather conditions will return," the Farmers' Almanac states in its "Winter 2024 Extended Weather Forecast."

When Is The First Day Of Spring In 2024?


The Old Farmers' Almanac stated that the first day of spring is Tuesday, March 19, 2024, also known as the spring equinox.

"In the Northern Hemisphere, the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere (also called the March equinox or vernal equinox across the globe) occurs when the Sun crosses the celestial equator going south to north. "

The Old Farmers' Almanac claims that 

"It’s called the “celestial” equator because it’s an imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator. Imagine standing on the equator; the Sun would pass directly overhead on its way north. "

They also shared that on the equinox in March for the Southern and Northern Hemisphere will have "roughly equal amounts of sunlight".

What Is The Old Farmers' Almanac Prediction For Spring 2024?


The Old Farmers' Almanac shared their weather predictions for Spring 2024.

They announced, 

"Spring as a whole has the potential to be warmer than normal across much of the U.S., with some exceptions."

In the Southwest, Florida and Appalachians, average temperatures are expected. However, the prediction continues with parts of the Upper Midwest, Intermountain region and parts of Oklahoma and Texas which may experience "below normal temperatures"

The Old Farmer's Almanac also informed people to not be surprised when cooler air spreads through the Rockies, Mid Atlantic and Appalachians.

A prediction of "fairly normal to above-normal precipitation" which may take place all throughout the country.

The Old Farmers' Almanac shared that there may be "above-average March temperatures" which could take place along the East Coast as we can expect to have a dry month as well.

The Old Farmer's Almanac claims that there may be "warmer than normal from New England to Florida" for the month of April.

I always know that spring has started when I first hear the sound of spring peepers. This may also consist of flowers start to blossom, the greenery throughout mother nature and return of several wildlife critters.
