New York Senator Chuck Schumer’s Viral Senate Clip Passes the Smell Test

There's no shortage of weird and/or viral moments when it comes to politics, but this one might just take the cake... or the beans.

A viral video making the rounds online appears to show Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer letting out a very noticeable "air biscuit" while speaking on the Senate floor. The sound happened during a live C-SPAN broadcast as Schumer criticized President Trump's handling of Iran, and within hours, social media had dubbed the moment "Tootgate."

Not Entirely Convinced

The internet, of course, wasted no time. Memes, slow-motion replays, and plenty of "Chuckie Cheeks" jokes flooded social media, with millions of people debating whether the sound really came from the New York senator.

Now, here's the deal:  I want to believe it, but I don't think he did.

Here's why: I've accidentally passed gas in the radio studio before. (Let's be honest... Chrissy probably has too.) But unless you've got a microphone pointed somewhere other than your mouth, nobody hears it. Our studio mics are built to capture voices—not whatever might be happening down below.

So unless Schumer had one microphone in front of his face and another strategically placed behind him, I'm skeptical that the sound actually came from him.

That doesn't make the clip any less funny. His reaction, the timing, and the internet's creativity have turned it into one of the week's funniest viral moments.
