Disney announced that a live-action of The Little Mermaid is in the works in May 2016, directed by, Rob Marshall. In early July 2019, Halle Bailey was announced to play the lead role as Ariel.

"After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” said Marshall in a statement

The original The Little Mermaid was filmed in 1989, telling the story of a mermaid princess from the sea that wished to become human after falling in love with a human prince. Bailey would be the second African-American actress to play a Disney's princess, singer Brandy in 1997 cast as Cinderella was the first, per yahoo.com. The 19 year old, singer duo with her sister Chloe ( Chloe x Halle ) would be cast with other  brilliant talented stars like Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina.
