There are a handful of castles here in New York. Boldt Castle in the 1000 Islands area of the state comes to mind. As does Lyndhurst in Tarrytown, NY. Each of these beautiful structures have been restored and maintained and you can even visit and take tours of these historic landmarks. Not all castles have enjoyed the same fate.

There is one castle close to the Capital Region that has been abandoned for 35 years and is now in ruins since, even though it is owned by the city it resides in. WARNING: Under no circumstances should you enter this property. For nearly 100 years Hearthstone Castle was home to wealthy families of Fairfield County in Connecticut. The rich and famous from New York's Hudson Valley would travel to Danbury, CT for elegant parties and elaborate events. There have been no parties, guests or even residents of this gem since it was abandoned in 1987.

Today Hearthstone Castle sits in ruins behind a chain linked fence waiting for current owners, the City of Danbury, to decide what to do with it. One consideration is to restore and open a portion of the property as a three-season pavilion and observation tower. These are grand plans but in it's day the castle even had it's own railroad built to deliver the stone used to build the castle.
