Boy Tries To Steal Second Base During New York Mets Game

Having worked in minor league baseball, one learns that in-between-innings promotions with little kids don't always go exactly how planned. In fact, even in the big leagues a six-year-old does what, well, a six-year-old does! Who knows what that is going to be? Tuesday night, as the Mets were taking on the Astros, the Houston promotional staff and players got a big surprise from six-year-old "Oliver," during a fan contest.

According to nypost.com writer Ted Holmlund, between innings of Tuesday's 8-2 Mets loss to the Astros, Oliver was selected to "Steal Second Base" as part of an on-field fan promotion. So, when the young boy was given his instructions, what did he do? He by-passed the "promotional second base" and ran to steal the real second base.

This is where the story gets fun. When the young boy reached second, he realized he couldn’t lift it up. So, instead of giving up, he looked to Astros second baseman Jose Altuve and shortstop Mauricio Dubon for some assistance!

Instead of waiting for a security guard or a promotions person to take the boy off the field, the two infielders tried to help young Oliver achieve his goal. However, neither of the Astros were able to lift the base out of the ground either. At that point the 3 discussed a game plan for Oliver.

Following a short discussion, Altuve pointed the boy towards the Astros promotional team and the real base that Oliver was supposed to steal.

After running across the field, Oliver met he Astros’ promotional team, who were in right field.

Oliver picked up the promotional base and dashed for the finish line.

Much to the delight of the entire Houston crowd and team, Oliver stole second base and he did not get arrested!
