Why is Boxing Legend Mike Tyson in the Cap Region this Weekend?
Mike Tyson is certainly no stranger to the Capital Region, having spent most of his teen years and early boxing career in Upstate New York. Tyson had a number of fights in the area during the 1980's at the Colonie Coliseum (aka Starlite Theater), RPI Fieldhouse, Glens Falls Civic Center and the Empire State Plaza Convention Center.
As it happens, this Saturday night Mike Tyson is returning to the place where he had his first professional fight and win. At age 18, Mike Tyson entered the ring on March 5, 1985 at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center. His opponent was a 3 year pro named Hector Mercedes. Tyson won the fight in the first round via TKO, launching an incredible undefeated streak that lasted five years and unified a number of boxing titles.
This time, Mike is back to host another fight night, albeit MMA instead of boxing. Cage Wars will take place Saturday at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center. There are seventeen fights scheduled, doors open at 2pm and the fights begin at 4pm.
Rivers Casino announced that Mike will be hanging out there Friday afternoon at 3 as part of the weigh-in ceremony. The public and media are welcome to attend.
So if you're out and about this weekend in the Albany area, keep an eye out. Mike Tyson may be right behind you.
