Traffic Stop Leads To Weapons Charges In Colonie
Once again a routine traffic stop has led police officers to discover illegal weapons inside of a car. Members of the Colonie Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the early morning hours of October 9, 2020. During that stop they discovered illegal handguns and arrested a 40-year-old man from Albany.
According to Colonie Police officers, Mr. Nelson Marrero was driving his vehicle early in the morning when officers stopped him in Colonie. When officers approached his vehicle, they spotted a rifle and hypodermic needles inside of the car.
According to News 10, after further investigation revealed that Mr. Marrero had a Ruger .22 rifle and a sawed off Magnum 12-gauge shotgun inside the car. They also found and confiscated a pry bar, knives, gloves, a mask, and shotgun ammunition.
Mr. Marrero was charged with two counts of third-degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon; seventh-degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance; and two traffic offenses. Officers are still trying to find out the original owners of the guns.
At the time of this incident, 40-year old Marrero was out on probation. He was on probation following an arrest and conviction for a 2011 armed home invasion. He also has two other felonies on his record and he is considered a level 3 sex offender.
Mr. Romero was arraigned in the Colonie Justice Court and he was remanded to the Albany County Correctional Facility without bail. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at the Colonie Justice Court.
Apparently, there are a lot of illegal handguns out on the streets. We must all be careful when we interact with people we don’t know, you never know who’s armed and potentially dangerous.
