Each year young women who work hard to help other people are acknowledged for that work with nominations to represent Albany as our Tulip Queen, or a member of her court.

The tradition dates back to 1949 when the first Tulip Queen was crowned in a beauty pageant.  The selection of the Queen is no longer done in pageant-style, she will be selected by her dedication to serving the community and for her community awareness.

The contest is open to women between the ages of 18 and 24, who can apply themselves, or others can send a letter of nomination for them.  Nominations can be submitted in March and April and finalists are announced in May.  Each contestant will participate in a series of interviews during the selection process.

The winner will participate in volunteer projects such as the Literacy Campaign and they will work with the United Way.  There are also monetary benefits to being crowned as the Queen.  The winner will receive a $5000 scholarship and each member of her court will receive a $1500 scholarship, in addition to the honor of serving as a queen or a court member.
