Good Luck Guessing Which Halloween Candy Is #1 In New York State
Whether your trick-or-treat, trunk-or-treat, or just buy bag after bag of the discounted stuff the day after, Halloween is a time for candy. It’s also a time for heated candy opinions. For example, the never-ending candy corn debate – invariably a snide comment from one side or the other will hit my Facebook feed in mid-September and will escalate like a Wild West bar brawl.
So what do you think is New York’s favorite Halloween candy? I’m a Reese’s Pieces guy myself, but I’ll go for anything peanut butter. Fortunately, we don’t have to guess. We have the cold, hard-shelled candy facts. With an estimated $3 billion to be spend on Halloween treats alone this year, let’s see what candy is the top earner in New York State.
Sweet, Sweet Profits
Each year CandyStore.com, an online candy retailer, combs through its data to find out the top selling spooky-season sweets in all of America and by individual states. For 2022, purchases are anticipated to be at a historic high, partly due to inflation and supply chain issues and also the post-lockdown urge to make up for lost time.
According to CandyStore.com, one of my favorites tops the list for the entire country – Reese’s Cups. Skittles are second, and the all-time-classic M&M’s are third. Looking at the top ten, it seems that most of America prefers sweet to sour. Does New York follow that trend with its top three?
Does New York Prefer Sweet Or Sour?
Both, actually. New York’s number one Halloween candy of 2022 is Sour Patch Kids. New Yorkers buy 136,729 pounds of the little guys. At number two is Hot Tamales, and the ever-controversial candy corn rounds off the top three.
So, are you going to stock up on the popular candies or maybe go against the curve? (More peanut butter candy, please.) Just whatever you do, don’t grab a bag of circus peanuts; they were ranked America’s least favorite Halloween treat.
