New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio Names Bronx Street Hip-Hop Boulevard

Hip-hop's birthplace has a new name. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has signed a new bill that renamed part of Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx to Hip-Hop Boulevard.

1520 Sedgwick Avenue was the location of a now legendary party that took place on Aug. 11, 1973. The party, which was thrown by the iconic DJ Kool Herc, is widely credited as the birth of hip-hop. At the very least, the event was one of the formative and most influential moments in hip-hop's history.

A few hip-hop luminaries were in attendance for the bill's signing. DJ Kool Herc, his sister Carol "The First Lady of Hip-Hop" Campbell and the legendary Afrika Bambaataa were on hand for this special honor of the music and culture they helped to create.

At the signing of the bill, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio had some fun with the reporter on hand. He made sure to remind everyone that hip-hop started in the Bronx.

"If you have friends on the West Coast, remember to tell them it all started here, okay? Just remind them of that fact," de Blasio told reporters. "Sorry, West Coast."

That was not the only hip-hop related renaming that took place in New York City though. The late Pumpkinhead, an underground rap and battle veteran, was also honored with a street named after him. Degraw Street between Fourth and Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn was renamed Robert PH Diaz Way. The talented MC passed away last summer.
