John Legend Posts Series of Outraged Tweets: ‘The Confederacy Was the Villain, Get Their Statues Out of Our Parks’
Since the horrifying, disgusting events in Charlottesville, VA on Saturday (Aug. 12), when white supremacists ran over a crowd of people, killing one and injuring 19 others, a number of celebrities have been outspoken about the events.
Always righteously outspoken, John Legend has added his voice to those who are publicly denouncing white supremacists and the Trump administration. In a flurry of tweets earlier today (Aug. 16), Legend blasted Americans who still are holding strong to the legacy of the Confederacy. Just yesterday, a 22 year-old student, Takiyah Thompson, was arrested for helping to dismantle a confederate statue in Durham, NC. Legend asked everyone to think about how ridiculous preserving the confederacy truly is.
"Think of how absurd and repugnant it would be to erect a memorial to Bin Laden in the middle of Ground Zero to 'preserve history,'" he wrote. "Preserving history doesn't require us glorifying the villain. The Confederacy was the villain. Get their statues out of our parks. They deserve no honor or reverence."
He also said that Americans could learn a lot from modern day Germans about publicly denouncing a shameful history. Take a look at his tweets below.
