Dam. Rabid Beaver Goes on Attack

A rabid beaver attacking multiple people in a New Jersey park sounds bizarre, but believe it or not, there’s a disturbing Upstate New York connection.

Police in Mahwah, NJ, say a rabid beaver recently attacked several people at Continental Soldiers Park, including an 8-year-old boy who was bitten while fishing near Lake Henry.

Chucked Back in the Lake

Video from another encounter earlier that day shows adults scrambling to escape before one man picked up the aggressive animal and threw it back into the lake.

Authorities later confirmed the beaver tested positive for rabies.

While attacks involving beavers are extremely rare, New Yorkers may remember a frightening 2014 incident near Rochester.

According to PIX11, a kayaker paddling through Irondequoit Creek was suddenly attacked by a beaver that knocked him from his kayak and dragged him into the water.

Upstate NY Beaver Attack Like a "Horror Movie"

The victim suffered deep puncture wounds to his arm and back while rescuers reportedly fought the animal off with a paddle before it disappeared underwater. Officials later located the dead beaver and tested it for rabies.

Witnesses described the scene as “like a horror movie.”

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says human interaction with beavers is uncommon, but warns people to leave the area immediately if a beaver behaves aggressively, approaches humans, hisses, or repeatedly tail-slaps the water.

Health officials also stress that anyone bitten by a beaver should seek immediate medical attention because of possible rabies exposure.
