Did You Feel Monday's Earthquake?

One of the great things about living in the Northeast is that - for the most part - we don't have the threat of unpredictable natural disasters that people in other parts of the country or world do.

More than likely, we're not getting many hurricanes, tornadoes, avalanches, landslides, wildfires, and droughts, but if we do, it's relatively mild.

But on occasion, Mother Nature can whip up a little Northeast excitement in the form of an actual earthquake, and that was the case on Monday. It was a mild one, but one that could have been felt here in Upstate New York if you were near the epicenter of it at around 5 PM yesterday.

"According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the 2.8 magnitude tremor was centered five and a half miles (9 km) north-northwest of Canton in St. Lawrence County. Those who experienced it heard and felt a loud thump followed by a rumble that lasted for a few seconds." - North Country Public Radio 

 

2.8 Magnitude Earthquake Reported in New York's North Country

According to Earthquake.usgs.org, a 2.8 magnitude tremor was reported in Canton, NY, which is about 3 and a half hours northwest of Albany.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, those who experienced it "heard and felt a loud thump followed by a rumble that lasted for a few seconds."

• 2.5 or less: Usually not felt, but can be recorded by a seismograph
• 2.5 to 5.4: Often felt, but only causes minor damage.
• 5.5 to 6.0: Slight damage to buildings and other structures.
• 6.1 to 6.9: This may cause a lot of damage in very populated areas.
