A couple of days ago we wrote about a local dad who is facing jail time for accidentally shooting his daughter in the back. He had until today to decide if he would accept a plea deal and today he appeared in court and pleaded guilty to a weapons charge.

On June 13th, 54-year-old Gregorie Smith accidentally shot his 10-year-old daughter in the back while she was in her bedroom. He appeared in court and pleaded guilty to one count of Attempted Second-Degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon.

Smith has an extensive felony record and he is prohibited from owning a gun legally. He admitted in court that he knew of this restriction, but he had a gun in his possession anyway.

We reported that he was offered a plea deal of 3 to 5 years in prison if he pleaded guilty. The weapons charge usually carries a maximum of 15 years, but with his extensive record, he could be given a life sentence. Do You think the crime fits the time?

On one hand, you have a convicted felon who has had multiple instances of trouble with law enforcement family and friends. This is not the first time the police have been called to this household over domestic incidents. On the other side, you have a record number of violent acts that have happened in Albany this year.

There have been over 100 shootings in Albany alone this year, with multiple deaths. Does a felon have the right to protect his family during violent times?

This case has so many layers and people will be divided based on your dealings with law enforcement. How long do you think this man should go to prison for because he has already pleaded guilty?
