Since it is the beginning of November, I am sure you have already or are still doing your favorite fall outdoor activity, raking leaves! Just kidding. If you're like most people, raking leaves is low on your list of favorite things to do. But the question remains: do you really need to rake your leaves in the Capital Region? According to experts, the answer is probably not. Here are three reasons why according to the National Wildlife Federation:

1: Leaves Provide Nutrients for Your Lawn
When leaves fall from trees, they decompose and release nutrients into the soil that help your lawn stay healthy and strong. Raking them up means depriving your yard of those vital nutrients it needs to thrive. So save yourself some time and let those leaves be!

2:Leaves Help Insulate Your Lawn from Extreme Temperatures
Leaves act as a natural insulator for your lawn, helping to protect it from extreme temperatures in both winter and summer. In winter, a layer of leaves helps keep the ground frozen, which can prevent damage from ice melts and de-icers. In summer, a layer of leaves helps keep the ground cooler and helps retain moisture. So if you want a healthy lawn all year round, leave those leaves be!

3:Leaves Attract Beneficial Insects to Your Lawn
Believe it or not, those fallen leaves are actually attracting beneficial insects to your lawn! Insects like ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps all help control harmful pests that can damage your lawn. So if you want a healthy lawn free of pests, leave those leaves be!

So there you have it! Three good reasons you don't need to rake your leaves in the Capital Region. I wish I had known that before I raked 30 bags!! Of course, if you want a neat and tidy yard without dead leaves in sight, feel free to rake away. But if you're looking to save time and effort, leave those leaves be!
