Mr. Chauvin spoke briefly in court at his sentencing hearing. He offered his condolences to the Floyd family and said that he hoped that the family would find “some peace of mind”.

We all know that Mr. Floyd was killed in a most inhumane fashion as Mr. Chauvin kept his knee placed on Mr. Floyd’s neck for almost 10 minutes.

Judge Peter Cahill said that he studied the case extensively and that his sentencing was based solely on the legal guidelines in Minneapolis. He made a point of stressing that he is not sentencing based on sympathy or public opinion. He ultimately sentenced Mr. Chauvin to more than two decades in prison.

Throughout the entire sentencing hearing, Mr. Chauvin remained calm. He did not show any emotions as he listened to his mother and Mr. Floyd’s family speak. He remained composed as he was escorted from the courtroom by deputies.

Community activists were hoping that Derek Chauvin would receive the maximum sentence and Mr. Chauvin’s supporters were asking for probation; in the end neither side got what they wanted.

I believe that Derek Chauvin should have received the maximum sentence for the brutal murder of George Floyd because of the barbaric way that he died. Derek Chauvin abused his power by basically choking the life out of a man who was no longer a threat. Mr. Floyd pleaded for his life and Derek Chauvin remained expressionless as he killed him. What are your thoughts, do you believe that Derek Chauvin got what he deserved ?
