Colonie Police Arrest Sex Offender on Illegal Weapons Charge
The Colonie Police Department made their 26th arrest yesterday for illegal handguns. This time they confiscated a stolen handgun taken from Georgia.
A resident of Statesboro, Georgia called the Colonie Police Department yesterday to report that a man had stolen her gun and she knew where he was in New York.
According to CBS 6, An unidentified caller told officers that she believed 34-year old Nicholas Cole, of Fort Myers, Florida was staying at the Courtyard Marriott at 274 Wolf Road in Colonie.
Officers obtained a search warrant for his room and car, but when they arrived Mr. Cole was not there.
Officers from the Patrol and Investigations Unit maintained surveillance on his room until he returned at approximately 11:20 p.m.
Further investigation revealed that Mr. Cole is a registered sex offender. In addition, a warrant was issued for Mr. Cole from the Schenectady Police Department because Mr. Cole failed to register as a sex offender.
Mr. Cole also had an outstanding warrant for Aggravated Harassment by the Rotterdam Police Department.
When Mr. Cole returned to his hotel room, he was detained without further incident. At the time of his arrest, Mr. Cole had the stolen handgun and a holster on his waistband.
Mr. Cole was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Possession of Stolen Property, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Criminal Contempt.
Mr. Cole was taken to the Albany County Correctional Facility where he will be arraigned sometime today. It doesn’t look like Christmas will be very merry for Mr. Cole.
