If you have traveled the New York State Thruway at all, you know that there are many rest areas closed. A lot of them only have gas available and no restrooms. Some of the rest areas along the Thruway have restrooms available seventy-three miles apart. The good news is there aren't two consecutive rest areas closed.

How Long Will These Renovations Last?

If you are traveling during the Christmas holiday with children, it's only going to get more difficult. These Thruway rest area renovations will go well into 2023. The first phase has eleven rest stops closed. Six more are slated to begin in 2022. Phase two will close eleven other Thruway rest areas and starts in early 2023. You really need to plan accordingly.

Plan Ahead if Traveling During the Holiday Season

If it wasn't bad enough that you have to make sure the weather is good when you travel the New York State Thruway, now you really need to plan your fuel stops and your bathroom breaks. A lot of people will say to just get off of the exit. Many times there aren't any stops that are right off an exit on the Thruway. Add in inclement weather and you could get stranded. Not to mention if you are traveling with small children, those bathroom stops are crucial. They don't always tell you when they have to go until it's too late.

What Can We Expect When The Rest Areas Are Done?

There will be major upgrades at all of the new rest areas including Shake Shack, Chick-Fil-A, and Panera locations inside the stops. Also, there will be fresh and local food inside the Applegreen convenience type stores inside the new Thruway rest areas.

Heartwrenching Look at Beloved Capital Region Concert Venue Before Demolition

The Starlite Music Theater opened in 1957 and was a popular venue located in Latham. There were many acts that passed through the Starlite until 1997. It was a 3,000 seat theater in the round. In the 1980s I saw Belinda Carlisle of the Go Gos at the Starlite Music Theater. Kenny Rogers, The Monkees, Weird Al Yankovic, Jonny Cash, Run DMC, Diana Ross, and more graced the stage. The Starlite closed its doors in 1998 and laid dormant for years. Then in December of 2012, the Starlite was demolished. Here are pictures of the venue in the summer of 2012 before it was leveled.
