Chaka Khan Thinks Kanye West’s “Through the Wire” Is Stupid
Over 15 years after Kanye West sampled "Through the Fire" for his debut single "Through the Wire," singer Chaka Khan admits she thinks the song is stupid.
On Wednesday night (June 26), the veteran songstress appeared on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen to talk about a variety of topics from her thoughts on Whitney Houston's legacy to Kanye West's iconic sample of her song, "Through the Fire." During her segment, Cohen asks how the conversations between her and 'Ye went before he sampled her song for his first official single "Through the Wire." Khan didn't hold back and explained how she really feels about the song.
"He called me when he just got out of the hospital. He said, 'You were so instrumental in my healing process. I changed the words a little bit to the song but I had to eat through a wire. Jaws wired shut through a straw.' It meant that much to me. It really got my heart, tugged at my string. I was like, yeah, use it. Then when it came out, I was pissed," Khan said after mocking the high-pitch hook. "It was a little insulting. Not insulting, I thought it was stupid! If I'd known he was gonna do that, I would have said, 'Hell no.'"
Kanye West dropped "Through the Wire" in 2003 via Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam Records. In 2002, West was in a horrific car accident which left his entire jaw wired shut. He managed to write and rap the lyrics during his healing process. He eventually made the song his first single off his debut album College Dropout, which arrived in 2004.
Khan told Cohen that she never told 'Ye how she really felt after all this time. As of this report, 'Ye hasn't responded to her opinion. Watch Chaka Khan bluntly reveal how she really feels about 'Ye's first single below.
