Hip-Hop Reacts to President Obama’s Farewell Address

Subscribe to HOT 99.1 on

President Barack Obama delivered his farewell address from McCormick Place in Chicago Tuesday night (Jan. 10), highlighting his achievements over his eight years in office and speaking to Americans about the uncertain future that lies ahead. You can watch the entire thing, complete with BJ The Chicago Kid singing the national anthem, up top.

The President’s emotional speech ran just short of an hour, as he spoke of the country’s solidarity. “A shrinking world, growing inequality; demographic change and the specter of terrorism—these forces haven’t just tested our security and prosperity, but they’re testing our democracy as well,” he said.

Many in hip-hop tuned in for the farewell address, using social media to thank President Obama and remember his time as commander in chief. Drake wrote that though he is Canadian, he “will always carry [Obama’s] words and the memory of your time in office with me as inspiration,” while Quavo called for Barry O to be placed on some U.S. currency. Twista shared a video of photos taken by Pete Souza, who followed the president during his administration, and Nas got poetic, writing, “Fair, strong, wise, a HERO to all people everywhere. Loved by many, missed by all.”

The President concluded by asking the American people to remember the strength displayed throughout the country’s history. “I am asking you to hold fast to that faith written into our founding documents; that idea whispered by slaves and abolitionists, that spirit sung by immigrants and homesteaders and those who marched for justice, that creed reaffirmed by those who planted flags from foreign battlefields to the surface of the moon, a creed at the core of every American whose story is not yet written,” he said. And as a final punctuation mark to his two terms, Obama returned to a key campaign slogan, telling the audience and those watching, “Yes We Can. Yes We Did. Yes We Can.”
