XXXTentacion’s “Changes” Featuring PnB Rock Goes Platinum
Before XXXTentacion's untimely death, the 2017 XXL Freshman had a lot to celebrate. Aside from releasing his first No. 1 album in March—just a few days before being shot and killed, X saw his ? singles "Changes" and "Sad!" reach platinum and multi-platinum status.
According to the Recording Industry Association of America, "Changes" was certified platinum on June 14, just four days before X would pass away. The platinum status of the song was news to PnB Rock, who assisted with vocals and helped write the song.
On Tuesday (June 19), the Philadelphia artist shared footage of him and X in the studio working on "Changes" and revealed he just found out the song went platinum. "Just found out me and bro went 'Platinum' wit this record," he wrote. "It's not even the same tho because i didn't get a feelin of happiness when i heard but instead i just cried because we ain't even get to share our moment together."
PnB Rock also praised XXXTentacion's musical talents and called his spirit "unmatchable." The artist added, "This was my brother. he checked me when i did stupid shit and i truly miss him for so many other reasons. Ya name gon live forever bro."
Along with "Changes," X's "Sad!" also reached platinum status on June 14 and was even certified double-platinum on the same day for moving 2 million units. While X got help from PnB on "Changes," the John Cunningham-produced "Sad!" was a truly solo effort that was penned by X.
It's safe to assume more of X's songs will posthumously reach platinum status, as the rapper's streaming numbers have soared following his death. According to reports, X's 17 and ? albums reached No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, on Amazon's Movers and Shakers Digital Music list.
XXXTentacion, real name Jahseh Onfroy, was shot and killed in Deerfield Beach, Fla. on Monday (June 18). He was 20 years old. According to police, the rapper was leaving RIVA Motorsports shortly before 4 p.m.. when he was approached by two armed suspects, reportedly wearing hoodies. At least one of the men fired a gun at X, which struck the rapper. The suspects were able to flee the scene in a dark-colored SUV.
