While the Capital Region is an up-and-coming hotspot for big Hollywood productions, some fly further under the radar than others. Not all productions want the same pomp and publicity that HBO’s ‘Gilded Age’ enjoys. Some prefer staying secret until the opportune time.

Now a thriller that filmed on the hush around Albany in Summer 2021 is USA Today’s wildest horror film of 2022. Maybe it’s the big name cast or possibly it’s the intensity of the storytelling, but its one of this year’s buzziest horror flicks – and you’ll see plenty of Albany while it happens.

“Hey, That Looks Familiar”

From the Empire State Plaza to South Troy Diner, the Capital Region shines in Resurrection; a new thriller set in Albany. The film stars Rebecca Hall (Vicky Cristina Barcelona, The Night House, The Town) and Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’).

“Margaret’s life is in order. She is capable, disciplined, and successful. Soon, her teenage daughter, who Margaret raised by herself, will be going off to a fine university, just as Margaret had intended. Everything is under control. That is, until David returns, carrying with him the horrors of Margaret’s past.” – Resurrection Plot Synopsis via Rotten Tomatoes

In an interview with the Times-Union after the film's release, director Andrew Semans said he chose the Capital Region because it's a "visually compelling urban setting" that has a feel much different than a usual location like New York City. Semans said his one regret about filming here was that they "weren't able to get more of the city in the film."

Resurrection premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January to positive reviews, and IFC Films bought the North American theatrical and video on demand distribution rights. Ironically, Albany wasn’t on the list of cities to get a theatrical release.

Resurrection is currently “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes at 81%. If you do watch the film, beware: they say the movie has some scenes that are especially disturbing for parents, and make sure you hurry. It’s currently available to rent on Amazon, Apple TV, and Google Play, but heads exclusively to horror-streamer Shudder on October 28.
