History was made over the weekend! Tyler Perry is the only black man to own a major movie studio in the U.S. He’s a director, screenwriter, producer and playwright who purchased the land back in 2015 which now holds 12 sound stages for movie productions.

A-List celebrities came out this past Saturday in Atlanta to celebrate the grand opening of Tyler Perry Studios. In attendance were Oprah Winfrey, Cecily Tyson, Taraji P. Henson, Jill Scott, Whoopi Goldberg, Keshia Knight Pulliam, Spike Lee, Ava DuVernay, Beyoncé, Jay Z and Halle Berry. Tyler Perry even dedicated each soundstage to a black person who has made history in Hollywood, such as the late Diahann Carroll.

Madea, *cough* I mean Tyler Perry has come a long way from his playwrights, wouldn’t you agree? Who would have thought he could have taken Madea from a playwright on stage in 99’ to an actual film series that spanned over a decade? The decision was made to put Madea to rest with his last movie “A Madea Family Funeral.” It is the final installment of the Madea character. Tyler is now moving on and upwards with more serious roles.
