Solange’s New Album ‘A Seat At The Table’ Has Arrived [STREAM]

Solange's new album, A Seat At The Table, is now available for streaming.

The 21-track album (including numerous short interludes) marks the first full-length project for the singer and model since 2008’s Sol-Angel And The Hadley St. Dreams, though she did release an EP, True, in 2012. That EP spawned the cult hits, “Lovers in the Parking Lot” and “Losing You,” the latter of which she shot a video for in South Africa.

Always innovative and forward-leaning— both in fashion and musically— Solange's latest offering features a slew of notable appearances, including Lil Wayne, Tweet, Q-Tip and BJ the Chicago Kid among others. The album also arrived with 112-page digital book of liner notes, lyrics and photos. And although her brother-in-law owns TIDAL and a number of artists have exclusively streamed albums there, Solange's project is available on all streaming services.

Raphael Saadiq, Troy "R8DIO" Johnson and Sir Dylan, show up to lend production on the mellow, piano-laden track accented by a heavy bass line, "Weary" also featuring vocals by Tweet. Solange sings about finding oneself and being weary and wary, "But you know that a king is only a man/With flesh and bones, he bleeds just like you do/He said "where does that leave you"/And do you belong? I do, I do."

On the super calm, bass heavy "Mad" which also features stark pianos, Solange enlists the assistance of Lil Wayne, who anchors Solange's airy falsetto. "You got the light count it all joy/You got the right to be mad/But when you carry it alone you find only getting in the way They say you gotta let it go," she sings. Wayne shows up, delivering an honest verse like only he can, "Yeah but I got a lot to be mad about/Got a lot to be a man about/Got a lot to pop a xan about/I used to rock hand-me-downs, and now I rock standing crowds."

Vocally, Solange better than she has before throughout the release—she sounds at ease with her voice, picking up on the tone texture she introduced on her True EP, while touching on relationships, world experience, being black in America, and the realities and joys of a being a black woman who refuses to conform to outside expectations.
