Post Malone Appears to Respond to Controversy Around “Rockstar”
On Tuesday (Oct. 17), it was reported that Post Malone's No. 1 song "rockstar" may have made it to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart thanks to a chorus-only version of the song uploaded to YouTube by Republic Records.
It appears the Stoney rapper caught wind of the reports, firing back at the claims on Twitter. Responding to a tweet from SPIN, Malone tweeted, "well the song is good so probably not the only reason why 😑😑." Later in the day, the rapper continued tweeting, writing, "whenever you live your dreams everyone wants to try to take it away from you." He also added a simple, "fuck you."
The version of "rockstar" on YouTube clocks in at three minutes and 38 seconds -- the same length as the real version -- but the YouTube version only features the song's hook played over and over. According to Billboard's criteria, YouTube streams do count towards a song's position on the chart, and plays of Post Malone's video would count as an official chart-qualifying stream.
In response to the reports, Billboard said, "U.S. streams for that clip do contribute to our song charts, the same way an instrumental track or a remix of a song would count towards the main song's placement if downloaded or streamed."
Post is also seeing success on the Billboard 200 chart, as his 2016 album Stoney rose to No. 4 on the chart this week after reaching No. 6 last week. It's believed the album is seeing a recent surge in popularity thanks to a clip of Post performing "I Fall Apart" going viral earlier this summer.
