At times, a rapper's best material is showcased on mixtapes, and in 2013, that proved to be the case for many artists. Without restrictions like copyright issues standing in the way, some of your favorite MC's took advantage of that freedom to create top-notch music. Choosing just one nominee to take the crown for Mixtape of the Year in The BoomBox Fan Choice Awards is no easy task.

Chance the Rapper's 'Acid Rap' was celebrated upon its release. In fact, it actually charted on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums even though it was released for free. Migos' 'YRN' and the other eight tapes didn't chart, but that's not too much of an issue when 'Versace' is on the tracklist. Although it wasn't on the same scale as 'Versace,' West Coast rapper Problem's 'The Separation' got a boost from 'Like Whaaat.'

PARTYNEXTDOOR didn't get such a boost from a single, but it definitely helps to have a Drake co-sign as you drop your self-titled debut. It also helps to have Party Supplies and be Action Bronson on the hilarious and off-kilter 'Blue Chips 2.' Roc Marciano and the Underachievers represent New York in totally different but entertaining ways on 'The Pimpire Strikes Back' and 'Indigoism,' respectively.

The Flatbush Zombies, another pillar of the Beast Coast movement from New York, improved on the summer standout 'BetterOffDEAD.' Closing out the contestants are renowned lyricists Pusha T with 'Wraith of Caine' and Big K.R.I.T. with 'King Remembered in Time.'
