Make Way! Massive 500,000 LB Mega-Load Arrived in Albany County!

Late last week, we told you about the massive, mega-load headed through Upstate NY and destined for the Hudson River, where it will reach its final destination, a Naval Base in Connecticut.

When we started tracking this bad boy last week, it was camped out overnight in the Town of Phelps, NY, located about 3 hours west of Albany and 45 mins west of Syracuse.

What is it?

The structure is actually a 500,000-pound condenser for a submarine known as a naval reactor.

Naval reactors are used by the United States Navy aboard certain ships to generate the steam used to produce power for propulsion, electric power, catapulting airplanes in aircraft carriers, and a few more minor uses.

This condenser, manufactured in Batavia, is in Albany County now and headed for the Hudson River to New York Harbor in New York City.

From there it will be moved by an ocean-going barge to its final destination: the Naval Submarine Base in Connecticut.

This gargantuan gadget is a game-changer when it comes to town - and State Police are on duty to assist.

Most wide-loads weigh up to around 80,000 pounds, but this is nearly 6X the size of that, and as you can imagine, when it slowly rolls through town, it causes a bit of a stir. Some residents claim that when they got stuck behind it, they traveled about 4 miles in 30 minutes.

On their Facebook page on Wednesday, the New York State Police alerted commuters that traffic gridlock is a strong possibility when dealing with a structure so big, that's also moving so slowly.

Traffic Alert: State Police will be conducting a wide-load escort on Thursday, July 28, 2022, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Route will begin in Greene County on Route 23 east to 9w north to Glenmont Road to 144 North to the Port of Albany. This load is approximately 497,500 pounds and will take up both lanes and will be moving at approximately 5 to 10 m.p.h. Drivers should plan an alternate route to avoid delays and congestion.
