How To Keep Your Children Safe After TikTok Trend Claims The Life Of Albany Student
There might not be a more influential app over the past decade than TikTok. The short-form video content app is one of the most used worldwide, and has been used for everything from entertainment to information and everything in between.
Unfortunately, its influence may have grown too far, and it's beginning to harm those too young to understand it.

Tragedy in the Capital Region
On Sunday, November 9th, the City School District of Albany released a statement. It was delivered by Arbor Hill Elementary Principal Rosalind Gaines-Harrell. She stated that the day prior, Saturday, November 8th, one of their students had passed away.
They passed away while attempting a viral challenge on TikTok, but the challenge itself has stayed unknown. What exactly the child was doing is irrelevant, we've seen challenges like this time and time again and they always lead to the same tragedy.
Keeping Your Children Safe
Over the years, challenges like this keep cropping up. The "cinnamon challenge", "tide-pod challenge", and "milk crate challenge" all led to injury and death for many who attempted them.
I Keeping your children safe from these dangers can be as easy as sitting down and having a talk with them. Explain to them the dangers of these challenges in a way that they'll be able to understand, listen to their thoughts and make sure they feel heard, and have a baseline awareness of what your children are doing on the internet. It can be hard, but being open and honest with your children is the best way to keep them safe in this era of unregulated internet access.
