New York State Troopers are going to be looking out for this immediately.

Over 9,000 problematic or fake license plate issues were reported in New York State. These are not license plates that have had the paint come off them, either.  The issue has to do with how tolls are collected. While some people have EZ-Pass and the detector mounted to their windshield, many people don't have this or simply rely on their license plate to do the work. The state has been using automated tolls that read license plates to bill the person or bill their EZ-Pass, but the issue is that thousands of problems have arisen with people trying to avoid the tolls. How? Here are three major ways:

  • People buy a certain spray that they think will deter the cameras from the tolls.
  • There is also a plastic film they will try to put over the plate.
  • In addition, there are fake plates that people are buying to try and avoid the tolls.

According to New York State, millions of dollars are lost from unpaid tolls. That's a problem, and so State Troopers will be on the lookout for people using these and other tactics to avoid the tolls. Don't be surprised if you see people getting pulled over and having their license plates checked.

If you do not pay your tolls, you will receive a notification and at least two late fees before being sent to collections. The late fees are approximately 50 dollars each time, so if you get two late fees for a toll that is 25 cents, for example, you will have to pay $100.25.

It is nearly impossible to tell the difference between real New York state license plates and a proliferation of vanity plates being sold online. It is illegal to sell them or mount them on your car. "These vanity plates are for those who want to avoid detection, committing a crime, or want to avoid tolls, and we are going to crack down on it," Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said.

According to the New York State website, the unpaid tolls in New York have been above $3.7 billion combined since 2021.
