Happy Birthday, Solange!
Beyonce is a legend, so it's not a small accomplishment that Solange eventually became known as more than just the R&B superstar's little sister. Solange turns 29 years old today (June 24).
It took Solange a while to get a grip on exactly what type of artist she wanted to become. After getting a start by singing the opening of Disney's The Proud Family (backed by Destiny's Child), the "T.O.N.Y." singer embarked on a warmly received solo career that featured two debut albums, 2002's Solo Star and 2008's Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams. They displayed her talent, but both albums weren't necessarily unique enough to solidify her as a star.
Solange eventually switched to the indie lane in 2012 when she released her best song "Losing You." She hooked up with Dev Hynes to make a warm, colorful track that ended up being a highlight in what was a great year of music. True, her last project, was also filled with soulful gems.
So Solange was getting deserved props as she was working on new material and getting her label Saint Records off the ground. That's part of why the infamous elevator incident with her brother-in-law Jay Z that showed her in a rage was so unfortunate. Not only did it start rumors and questions about the stability of Jay and Bey's marriage, but for that entire year, it overshadowed Solange's artistic endeavors.
But all of that is in the past. Solange has moved forward and is now happily married to her husband Alan Ferguson. She's also doing some great things with her gig at Puma and at her label Saint Records.
