Governor Cuomo Signs Two New Laws In New York State; One Is Strange

It was a busy Tuesday for Governor Andrew Cuomo. Usually, every day is a busy one for the Governor of the State of New York, but he signed two new laws on Tuesday, and one of them is making people go, "really?"

According to Governor Cuomo's Twitter account, he signed a new legislation that will protect New Yorkers from telemarketing by text messaging.

The law expands the definition of telemarketing to include both text messages and phone calls.

Before this, spam in the way of text messages was not identified as telemarketing by law but will be so now, as will robocalls, which has been a longstanding problem in New York.

It should go without saying, but simply delete any telemarketing text message that you may receive and do not click on any links you are unsure of.

That wasn't all, however.

Cuomo also signed a new law that is making people go, "wait, really?"

The legislation signed by Governor Cuomo on Tuesday morning will repeal provisions of a law that prohibited the "practicing of barbering" on Sundays, according to WIVB. Yes, that was actually a law on the books.

The law prohibited cutting hair or giving a shave to another person on a Sunday, although this was rarely enforced.

“This is the very definition of an archaic and meaningless law that makes little to no sense in the 21st century,” Gov. Cuomo saidin a press release. “While not routinely enforced, I’m more than happy to sign this repeal into law and allow these businesses to determine what days they choose to operate.”

Did anyone know that? I sure didn't, but at least now that is taken care of. Sometimes we run across old laws that are technically on the books that make us shake our heads.

Using March 2019 data from the Social Security Administration, Stacker compiled a list of the most popular names in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C., according to their 2018 SSA rankings.
