A former correctional officer with the Schenectady County Department of Corrections has been indicted for assaulting a detainee.

According to CBS 6, In November of 2020, 28-year old Eugene Sellie was employed as a correctional officer with the Schenectady County Department of Corrections.

One night Mr. Sellie became irritated with a detainee and then he viciously attacked the detainee causing grave injuries that required hospitalization. It was reported that Mr. Sellie punched and kicked the defenseless person who was being detained.

The assault left the victim hospitalized with bruises to his face, a broken collarbone, and numerous broken ribs. Because of the vicious attack, the former correctional officer was fired and he was arrested. In addition to attacking the victim, Mr. Sellie neglected to summon medical assistance for the injured person.

Yesterday the Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office announced that the former correctional officer was being indicted on charges in connection with the brutal beating of the detainee.

He was charged with two counts of Assault and two counts of Official Misconduct. His neglect in getting medical assistance for the injured person is why he was charged with Official Misconduct.

I can imagine that being a correctional officer is an extremely stressful job. I’m sure that the officers are in contact with some annoying people, but attacking them is never the right thing to do.

Everyone is not cut out to work with inmates, and it seems like Mr. Sellie may not have been cut out for the job. I’m sure he never imagined himself being on the other side of the law.
