The powerful storm that swept through the Capital Region yesterday afternoon came fast and furious catching many of us by surprise.  Trees were uprooted, power lines came down and sadly, at least two lives were lost yesterday afternoon as a result.  This morning, as many people in the Capital Region wake and start the day, they're doing so without power.  It's estimated that at least 140,000 people in the area are without power, and if you take a look at the National Grid power outage map, you'll see the entire Capital Region has pockets of areas that are down.  As of this morning, National Grid has not estimated when power will be restored to the various areas affected.

Albany County, according to the National Grid outage map appears to have been hit the hardest with as many as 100,000 affected in just that area alone with Colonie and West Albany seemingly hit the hardest.

West of Albany out in the Schenectady area seems to have been hit hard by the storm as well and many are without power as well with numbers estimated to be somewhere between 30,000 and 50,000.

Last night, National Grid posted this message on their website:

"We’re working to assess damage and will be updating estimated restoration times as they become available. Customers are reminded to never touch downed power lines and always assume they are carrying live electricity. Downed lines should be immediately reported to National Grid at 1-800-867-5222 or by calling 911."
