It seems like we may never get a Costco in the Capital Region. The plans have been submitted and construction was supposed to begin but there are a lot of residents and a non-profit that have raised concerns. Just recently there was another meeting, this time in front of an appeals panel.

What Are the Concerns of Building the Costco?

Save the Pine Bush which is a non-profit group that feels they never got the opportunity to raise concerns in court about the environmental impacts of building the Costco which is a 160,000 square foot building. They are also concerned about the apartment complex that is also proposed. They claim that have not been heard about the impacts of the commercial construction near the AlbanyPine Bush. Specifically how it will affect the endangered Karner Blue butterfly and hiking trails.

The Town of Guilderland Planning Board Disagree

Peter Barber who is the Guilderland Town Supervisor argued Wednesday that the two-year review was "complete and thorough" according to the Albany Business Review. He also says that the DEC and the Pine Bush Preserve Commission agreed that the review was complete. Pyramid Management, argued that there would be no impact on the Karner Blue Butterfly. Plus he stated that the hiking trails are a quarter of a mile away from the proposed site. There is also a two-hundred-foot buffer between one site and where the Karner Blue butterflies are.

What Happens Next?

The arguments were heard on Wednesday in front of an appeals panel. There is no set date as to when a ruling will be given, but they could take six to ten weeks. Pyramid Management asked the court to come up with a verdict sooner than later so it won't jeopardize the deal with Costco.
