The Jacka Shot and Killed, Rappers & Singers Mourn on Social Media

The hip-hop community is mourning the loss of Bay Area rapper The Jacka. The veteran rhymer was shot and killed in Oakland, Calif., on Monday (Feb. 2). He was 37 years old.

Details are scarce but according to KPIX, neighbors heard gunshots around 8:15PM and police responded soon after. There have been no arrests in this homicide case as of yet.

The Jacka, whose real name is Dominic Newton, was a major figure in the Bay Area rap scene. His 20-year career stretches far back to the days as a member of Mob Figaz, a group lead by founder C-Bo in 1997. Among the Bay Area artists he has collaborated with through the years include E-40, Mac Dre, Mistah F.A.B., and many more.

In 2001, Jacka became an independent artist and released over a dozen solo projects, including his last album, ‘What Happened to the World’ in 2014. He also founded his own indie label, The Artist, and would perform regularly at clubs in the Bay Area.
