The Place Beyond The Pines, starring Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling, is the latest of money Hollywood blockbusters to be filmed in the capital region. Other films that have been filmed here over the years include Salt starring Angelina Jolie, The Other Guys starring Mark Wahlberg and Will Farrell, Taking Woodstock starring Liev Schreiber, Seabiscuit starring Tobey Maguire and The Horse Whisperer starring Robert Redford. Speaking of Redford, his most recent directorial project has Albany ties as well.

Redford’s “The Company You Keep” is opening in NYC and LA this weekend and will be released nationwide in a few weeks. The movie wasn’t filmed in the capital region, but it’s based here.

The movie is a thriller centered on a Weather Underground activist who goes on the run from a journalist who has discovered his identity in the 1970’s. Playing the role of the activist, Redford relocates to Albany NY and resumes the identity of a lawyer.

The cast features a ton of big named talent – Shia LaBeouf, Susan Sarandon, Terrence Howard, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Julie Christie, Stanley Tucci, Richard Jenkins and Anna Kendrick to name a few.

The film was filmed in Vancouver. Apparently Canada is almost as cool as Albany.

Critic scores on IMDB range from 30/100 to a perfect 100/100. On the high end, Rex Reed of the New York Observer (who gave the flick a 100/100) says “It’s only April, but this is one of the best films of 2013.” On the low end, Village Voice writer Michael Atkinson says “Far from engaged, the film practically surrenders in an arthritic faint.”

NOTE in the trailer below - LaBeouf plays a reporter for the... "Albany Times."  OUCH, Times Union!!
