Questlove and Black Thought to Executive Produce ‘Rap Yearbook’ Docu-Series
The Roots' Questlove and Black Thought are executive producing a new AMC docu-series, tentatively titled, AMC Visionaries: The Rap Yearbook.
The upcoming six-part series is based on the 2015 New York Times Bestseller by Shea Serrano, The Rap Year Book: The Most Important Rap Song From Every Year Since 1979, Discussed, Debated, and Deconstructed.
Serrano, who also authored Bun B's popular Rapper Coloring and Activity Book, went on Twitter on July 29 to express his excitement about the pending series.
"Wrote a book about rap & now AMC is turning it into a 6-episode documentary with The Roots as executive producers on it the universe is wild,” he wrote. “This s--- don’t even feel real.”
According to AMC, each episode is focused on the story of one key song, and features special guest rappers and contributors to the songs. Each episode is narrated by a special guest emcee. It's not surprising that Questlove is involved in the project, as a well-known music lover with a depth of knowledge that he shares on his weekly Pandora show, Questlove Supreme. He's also received a lot of attention for his infamous celebrity stories, particularly about Prince, which were animated for Okayplayer's Storyville series.
As for AMC's new series, it's all about enlightening more people about hip-hop.
"The series gives viewers a deeper understanding of what hip-hop is all about by diving into the music and its history," the network says, via Variety.
As of now, the series doesn't have a premiere date.
