Just when inflation started to slow a bit, we have even bigger heating bills on the horizon this winter.

Ya know, it figures. Just as inflation seems to be easing a bit gasoline prices are starting to do down to a point where it actually feels like you are keeping a little bit more money in your pocket, the other shoe drops.

After last winter, I honestly did not feel our heating bill could get any higher. The funny thing is, my summer National Grib bill used to outpace our winter heating bill - but that script flipped last winter with high gas prices, and we can all expect to pay even more this year.

According to the Times Union, National Grid officials are saying New York customers this year can expect almost a 40 percent (39% to be exact) increase in heating costs, amounting to about $50 more for the average New Yorker. This is on top of a 30% increase last winter due to inflation and lagging gas production during COVID. The report says production has rebounded, but high electricity demand this summer due to hot temps is still driving the price of natural gas up. That high gas cost will also drive up the average electric portion of your National Grid bill by an average of $23 a month this winter, according to the Times Union.

So how can you combat these costs? Get those draft windows and doors sealed, make sure everyone has extra blankets, and keep that thermostat as low as you can all winter long!
