Meek Mill has been given an opportunity to argue in court to overturn his 2008 gun and drugs conviction. This incident led Meek to be sentenced to eight months behind bars and five years of probation.

On Tuesday morning (June 4), Meek Mill's legal team told XXL that the rapper has been granted an appellate court hearing in front of the Pennsylvania Superior Court. This gives Meek's lawyers the opportunity to have the rapper's original conviction overturned without the involvement of Judge Genece Brinkley, a judge whom the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office had recommended be removed from Meek's case after accusing her of an anti-Meek bias. According to court docs, Meek was granted a new hearing on Monday.

“We’re looking forward to the oral argument before the Superior Court of Pennsylvania and to, hopefully, having Meek’s conviction vacated," reads a statement from Meek's lawyer, Jordan Siev. "In light of the District Attorney’s recent filing, where he supports the granting of a new trial to Meek and the recusal of Judge Brinkley, we hope to have this injustice rectified once and for all."

The notion of having Meek's gun and drugs conviction get overturned came up after it was revealed that Officer Reginald Graham, the man who arrested Meek in 2007, was embroiled in corruption scandals. Graham reportedly gave false testimony in some of his cases, and one of the cases was Meek's.

Graham reportedly testified that Meek had pointed a gun at officers at the time he was arrested, and Meek denied the claims. Graham's fellow officer, Jerold Gibson, backed up Meek's claims of innocence.

Last June, Judge Brinkley denied the MMG rapper's effort to get a new trial for the case, but now, Meek's legal team will finally have a chance to convince the Pennsylvania Superior Court to overturn Meek's 2008 conviction.

Meek Mill's new court hearing in Philadelphia with the Superior Court will take place on July 16 at 3:30 p.m.
