Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Perform ‘Same Love’ at 2014 Grammy Awards
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performed their marriage equality song 'Same Love' at the 2014 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (Jan. 26). In a gesture of love and unity, the four-time Grammy-winning duo allowed 33 couples from different sexual orientations and backgrounds to get married during their performance.
Queen Latifah, an outspoken supporter of same-sex marriage, introduced Macklemore to the stage, which was designed as a church cathedral. Macklemore was dressed in an all-black suit with a snazzy string tie.
Latifah then officiated the nuptials, while singer Mary Lambert and jazz artist Trombone Shorty performed the polarizing song. Among those getting hitched was Ryan Lewis’ sister Laura.
Madonna then appeared onstage -- dressed in an all-white outfit -- to sing a tender rendition of 'Open Your Heart' with a gospel choir backing her up.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ performance left many in the audience in tears. And in an amusing moment, Katy Perry was holding a bouquet of flowers flung by one of the marrying couples. Are there wedding bells in the future for Perry and John Mayer?
Ryan Lewis told the New York Times that the onstage marriages were not a gimmick but something they felt was important to show the world that love is universal and has no barriers.
"[The weddings] will be in our minds the ultimate statement of equality, that all the couples are entitled to the same exact thing," he said.
Overall, it was a beautiful performance that will go down as one of the most memorable moments at the 2014 Grammy Awards.
