Kendrick Lamar Gives Electrifying Performance on ‘Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ [VIDEO]
Kendrick Lamar has to be one of Stephen Colbert's favorite rappers. The Compton, Calif. rhymer hit the stage as the first musical guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday night (Sept. 9).
Lamar, who was Colbert's last performer on The Colbert Report, performed a mix of songs from his sophomore album, To Pimp a Butterfly: "Wesley's Theory," "Momma," "King Kunta" and "u."
Dressed in all black, a silver cross chain and cornrows, the MC brought the songs to life onstage as he rearranged the fan favorites. Backed by a solid band that included Bilal, Anna Wise and Thundercat, Lamar displayed his many lyrical voices while performing.
For "Momma," the good kid, m.A.A.d city creator broke down and emphasized every line as he paused himself between lyrics several times. "This feeling is unmatched." Pause. "This feelin' is brought to you by adrenaline and good rap / Black Pendleton ball cap." Pause. "We don't share the same synonym fall back." Pause. The music seemed to be bringing the creative artist back to life. During "u," the rapper began dancing, kicking his legs and popping his arms.
As Colbert introduced K. Dot (while holding a vinyl version of To Pimp a Butterfly), he jokingly called his album a sequel to a fictitious children's book titled The Very Horny Caterpillar.
This won't be the last we see of the two joking together. In a video released through Colbert's Twitter account, Lamar said he's willing to come back for "10 more seasons, 20 more seasons, just like that as long as you keep bringing me back." Colbert tweeted that he suddenly has "enormous affection for Kendrick Lamar."
Kendrick Lamar stans should also expect another dose of creativity from the rapper soon as well. A video surfaced on Instagram, which shows a preview of visuals for "Wesley's Theory" (with cameos from Ice Cube and George Clinton.)
