Record-Breaking ‘Monster’ Catfish Caught in New York State
The Search for the Big One
I haven't spent enough time dropping bobbers into water to know the feeling or the adrenaline rush that comes with thinking you've caught the Big One.
I'd imagine it's similar to hitting one pure golf shot during an otherwise ordinary round, that keeps you coming back for more.
But much like golf, fishing requires a short memory and patience. You'll fail way more times than you'll be successful, but you've got to keep casting lures if you're ever going to catch the big one.

Man in Upstate New York Catches Record-Breaking Fish
According to a report by the NYS DEC, Dylan Kampnich of Dexter, New York, located about three hours northwest of Albany, caught a "monster" on May 3rd while fishing with his young son.
According to the report, Kampnich caught a 37-pound, nine-ounce channel catfish from Black River Bay in Jefferson County. This king-sized catfish broke the previous record (also caught at Black River Bay) by two pounds.
How Big is the Average Channel Catfish?
Sources say the average channel catfish weighs between 2 and 4 pounds and is at least 12 inches long. While the average size is 2-4 pounds, some can grow significantly larger. The world record for a channel catfish is a 58-pound fish caught in South Carolina in 1964.
We’re excited to report that the first state record fish has been established for 2025! Dylan Kampnich of Dexter, NY caught a 40-inch, 37 lb. 9 oz.
