Our thoughts are with our fellow New Yorkers in the Buffalo area and all with the first responders sent out that way to help - many of them are from the Capital Region.

While emergency crews from all over New York State have made their way to help the Buffalo community dig out of the catastrophic blizzard, others are taking this as an opportunity to rob, loot, and steal.

"I don't know how these people can even live with themselves, how they can look at themselves in the mirror. They are the lowest of the low." -Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown

The absolute lowest of the low is what the Mayor of Buffalo calls them, and who could disagree?

According to several sources, the death toll in Buffalo is already closing in on 30, but sadly, that could go up.

Some residents in western New York have been trapped inside their homes, without power in the freezing cold, and the massive snow totals make it difficult for emergency crews to check on them.  It could be days before anyone knows how many perished in this catastrophe.

While residents and emergency crews in western New York deal with the most catastrophic blizzard in history, some are using this as a chance to rob stores blind.

Watch as looters, some on snowmobiles, clean out a Family Dollar store in Buffalo on Christmas, below.

According to WIVB Buffalo, Mayor Byron Brown had harsh words for those looting stores in the aftermath of the blizzard telling the media,  "I don't know how these people can even live with themselves, how they can look at themselves in the mirror. They are the lowest of the low."

The Mayor also went on to say that people who are looting, aren't doing so out of need.  They're just stealing things they'd like to have. "They’re just looting items that they want...these aren’t people in distress," he said according to WIVB.

What happens to looters?

In most cases, they are prosecuted - but the substantial proof is needed. These videos help, but in most cases, police need to witness the crime in action in order to uphold the law.  NY Governor Kathy Hochul did say looters will "meet the law in a way they probably didn’t encounter. We’re going to be going after them."
