New York’s Ice Volcano Is A Truly Magical Winter Attraction
New York State is beautiful year round. Lake George and Saratoga Race Track in the Summer, the Adirondacks in the Fall, Hudson Valley in the spring and now that it's winter we can explore Ice Castles, hit the slopes and take pictures of our Ice Volcano!
Yes, New York has an Ice Volcano and it's one of the "coolest" things you will see this season.
I am about to give you a sneak peek at the Ice Volcano from years past. If you want to see it in person this winter, head to Letchworth State Park in Castile, New York, which is about a 4 hour drive from the Capital Region. Make a weekend out of it or just look at the pictures and video below.
So, what is an Ice Volcano? There is a fountain at the Glen Iris Inn at Letchworth State Park that was built in the late 1800's. In the Winter months water is pulled from the Trout Pond through a pipe and out of the nozzle. According to the Glen Iris Facebook page, the pressure from the water coming downhill sends a spout flying continuously about 50 feet in the air. No pumps, no motors, no heaters. Just science!
Record height for this Ice Volcano is round 50 feet tall! How tall will the volcano get this Winter? As it gets colder, the volcano will get taller. January and February are typically best times to visit. On January 1, 2023 Letchworth State Park is offering a First Day Waterfalls Hike which will include the Glen Iris fountain known to some as the “Ice Volcano” in the winter.
